Fauna in Agios Efstratios


In Agios Efstratios 35 bird species have been identified, almost all migratory. the migratory hawk, Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae), as well as other sea birds such as the Yellow-legged Gull (Larus cacchinans), the European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) and the Yelkouan shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan) find shelter at the steep rocky coasts of the island. Among other birds you can meet there the Rock Dove, the Hooded Crow, the Chukar Partridge and the Common Kestrel. On the island you can also see the European rabbit (Οryctolagus cuniculus) and the protected species of Eastern European Hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor), as well as the non-venomous reptiles Four-lined snake (Elaphe quatuorlineata) and Caspian whipsnake (Coluber caspius), snake-eyed lizard (Ophisops elegans), European legless lizard (Ophisaurus apodus) and Kotschy’s gecko (Cyrtodactylus kotschyi adelphiensis). While the sea caves of the rocky coastal zone are the ideal shelter for the Mediterranean Monk seals Monachus monachus.
